Being "Out and Proud" Nerds / Geeks ourselves, we have a special place in our hearts for cakes like those on this page... and figured it's about time they basked in the spotlight they deserve! Click any photo to view a larger version. Geeky Wedding Cakes The Super Mario Brothers Wedding Cake This was definitely one of my favorite wedding cakes EVER! Everything you see here, aside from Mario and Princess, is edible! Bowser and the Pirahna Flower are sculpted out of Rice Krispie Treats and our yummy marshmallow based fondant.. the Super Troopas, Goombas, and Mushrooms are all hand sculpted from our fondant. I love the way the angry little faces turned out on the Goombas, specifically. Funny note about the design and delivery of this cake: My husband dug out his old original NES system, and we played quite a bit of Super Mario Bros to "research" for this cake. Well, that's what we're calling research, anyway. I swear, trying to remember where all the warp holes were is *totally* relevant to cake design! Anyway, one of the very first things the groom noticed about the cake was how accurate the bottom two tiers (Levels 1.1 and 1.2) were! Score!               The Portal Companion Cube set This set definitely qualifies as a nontraditional wedding cake choice, and I loved it! The Companion Cube cake is the wedding cake, and the "cake" cake is the groom's cake! The cake was NOT a lie, but it was yummy! The couple went with our Chai cake - always a great choice. Literary Wedding Cake I loved this cake, and the couple was awesome! I'll never forget it.They met in a Library, and she was an accountant. Our design session went from them not knowing what they wanted, to THIS. This seemed the obvious choice, and I looked forward to their wedding for the better part of a year! The accounting Calculator was carved from Rice Krispie Treat, and the "Book Worms" were styled to loosely resemble the bride (blonde hair), and groom (dark hair, goatee). One of the coolest things? Their centerpieces were actually stacks of books! Awesome.     "Foopmallet" This is probably the Nerdiest groom's cake ever. Foopmallet is the name of the groom's World of Warcraft character, and this cake is an edible replica of that character. Of course, it doesn't stop there.. the majority of the bridal party for this particular wedding are gamers. This not only made the cake design utterly appropriate - and even more awesome - but it begged for a custom flavor. Red Bull.Yes, Foopmallet is made from Red Bull flavored cake and buttercream! I know, it sounds weird.. but it was actually really good! The cake cuts the nasty, and what's left is a light citrusy tasting cake with a kick! Update! Foopmallet is famous! Check out Great White Snark's hilarious blog entry about him! Another update! 1 month after his creation, Foopmallet gained an awful lot of hitpoints... very likely the first instance of "cake taxidermy" ever! Click here for all of the details, including photos!. Nerdy Event Cakes You don't need to be getting hitched to have an amazingly nerdy cake! Birthdays, Anniversaries.. or just for the hell of it. Here are some favorites.. Tardis Cake... for Wil Wheaton! W00tstock came to Minneapolis. Paul and Storm, Wil Wheaton, Adam Savage, the MST3K guys, and Neil Gaiman were all there - and enjoyed our cake! What an epic night! It was awesome. Check out the blog to read all about it - and see a video of Paul and Storm raving about it! - here.     Klingon Bird of Prey This 4' long cake was created for the opening night of "A Klingon Christmas Carol", which is pretty much the most awesome thing ever to grace a stage. The classic story of "A Christmas Carol" was tweaked to reflect a Klingon theme (Scrooge had no honor!), was translated into Klingon, and performed with English subtitles projected onto the screen! Awesome. The cake was 3' front to back, red velvet cake with amaretto swiss meringue buttercream. Aside from the thin body of the wings, the entire cake was edible! We have a blog entry with a ton of details about the cake, and the event: Here Silence of the Lambs Cake/ Hannibal Lecter's Victim Cake This was our entry in Minnesota Monthly's 2010 Food & Wine Experience "Czar of Cakes" Challenge. The only requirement was that the cake have a food & wine theme, and that the cakes be "over the top". So, we did the proper thing and went with a gory, life sized Silence of the Lambs entry, replete with Rice Krispy Treat bottle of Chianti, fondant liver & fava beans, sugarpaste "Death's Head" moths, basil, cutlery, plate, and Hannibal's mask. Oh, and gory fondant brains with corn syrup blood, of course. I think they may end up revisiting their entry rules for next year. Click here to read a blog entry with the full story, as well as more photos!         Gamer's Dream Cake How many games were we able to pay homage to in one cake? Here we go! We started with a custom cake board, which featured a hand drawn RPG grid, as well as Dungeon Master Screen printouts for Dungeons and Dragons. Starting from the bottom, the tiers represent Risk cake, Settlers of Cattan cake, Trivial Pursuit cake (Old school Genus edition!), Nintendo NES Cake, and topped with a carved D-10 Dice cake. Accesorizing the cake, we have edible Nintendo controllers and Atari joysticks made from Rice Krispie Treat and fondant, as well as sugar Scrabble tiles! Truly a Gamer's delight.. and COMPLETELY edible! R2-D2 Birthday Cake. Entirely Edible. 'Nuff Said!     Novels & Ipod. 2 of the Novels cake-ized were written by the birthday boy himself! My husband, a Nerd's Nerd, loves The Simpsons. This was his bday cake.   Nerdy Laptop What's not to love about a laptop wearing taped-up sugar glasses? This was the cake for a "Revenge of the Nerds" themed birthday. Awesome! Screen was Rice Krispie Treat fortified with chocolate, glasses were made from sugar paste. Even the pocket protector and contents were sugar!     The Dali Cake Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory" is one of the most well known works of art ever. You know. The Drapey clocks one. It's supposed to be an artistic representation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. So, back in 2007 when we were asked to make a cake for Minnesota Mensa's regional gathering, Dali immediately came to mind. You see, the theme was "Back in the Future", and was all about .. well, time, relativity, etc. Plus, it was a great excuse to just get weird with a cake. That's ALWAYS a good thing! Check out our blog entry about this cake Here Back to the Future Delorean! Speaking of "Back in (to!) The Future"...   The detail on this cake was a lot of fun to do! We aimed for as much accuracy as possible, even if the functionality was a bit lacking. (Though, we didn't actually TRY to get the cake moving at 88 miles per hour..) This cake actually resulted in the coolest comment I think we've ever received. Someone Tweeted a link to this with the comment "1.21 Giganoms!". Awesome.   Super Mario Anniversary Cake A mini version of the Super Mario wedding cake awesomeness... but with the added bonus of itty-bitty sugar piranha flowers! Too cute. This was for a 1st anniversary dinner.. "1 up", get it? I love when people give me creative license. :) The Pi Day Pinata Ok, so it's not cake.. but this is my site, and I say it qualifies for the Geek Gallery! This is the PInata I designed for my husband's epic Pi Day party. The party also involved pie (duh), a PInapple juice toast in honor of Einstein's Birthday, PIzza (St Patrick's Day themed though), PI Trivia, Pi Haiku writing, and more. A truly hardcore nerd fest! The PInata was easy - just a bit time consuming - to make, but the reaction of our guests was totally worth it.
