About the cake: “Persistence of Memory”

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Salvador Dali's

Well, this morning was our Kare 11 interview. They’d asked me to work on a cake on camera, so with a convention coming up this weekend, I figured this cake would be perfect! This is for the Minnesota Mensa group, meeting this weekend.

This cake underwent a total evolution from the time we initially went over plans with the hospitality chairperson for the event. The initial plan was to do something relatively plain and “autumn-y”. When I found out that it would be on the news, I contacted them for the go-ahead to go nuts with the idea.. and here’s what we ended up with! (more…)

Kare 11 - Ace of Twin Cities Cakes

The following is the text article Kare 11 posted on their site, to accompany the news article they covered today.  The quotes are fairly paraphrased, but you get the idea anyway :)

About the cake: “Raven”

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Raven
Well, this cake is less than 24 hours old, and we’ve already had a ton of questions about it. Figured I’d post some information here, for those curious.

This cake was made as a “thank you” to Kare 11 for doing the piece on me. “Raven” is a black labrador retriever who figures prominently in one of their local shows - “Minnesota Bound”. The dog is kind of… iconic.  At the end of the show, the host even jokes that she is the “star” of the show, which is about Minnesota outdoor life. One of our cats (Rat) LOVES the show - especially when the birds are on the tv.

Vendor Commentary - Midwest Sound & Light

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Jesse from Midwest

Woo! Second vendor commentary already!

Today I went by Midwest to show them my portfolio, and bribe them with cake to get on their referral list. Shameless, huh? LOL.Anyway, that brief little visit was a great reminder about how awesome these guys are, and I figured I should write a commentary on them. After all, they were the company that DJed my own wedding way back when, and they rocked it pretty hard.

I think I mentioned in my last vendor blog - I’m not getting bribed or bargained into writing these commentaries, I’m just going to feature really interesting or cool businesses.Anyway.. can’t really describe in words how great our DJ (Jesse) was at our wedding. Especially when contrasted with how horrible our photographer was, the DJ really *made* the reception. (more…)

Margaret Braun cake - Finished!

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Well, after much cursing the idea to have tried this in the first place, the cake is done!

It was actually finished late last week, but due to a wedding show on the weekend, I ran out of time to post it. Those of you who were at the wedding show may have seen it on our display table.

For those of you who didn’t… here’s a final photo!

Cake Challenge Update

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Ok, so I ended up getting a little sidetracked - we have a wedding show coming up this weekend, so I’ve been racing around getting everything ready for it. I DO intend to have this “challenge” cake on display at the show, so I had to get cracking! (more…)

The Cake Challenge

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

After hearing so much about it, I recently received the book “Cakewalk : Adventures in Sugar with Margaret Braun”.

If you haven’t heard of it, here’s the scoop: Margaret Braun is a well known “sugar artist”/cake decorator in NYC. Her work is incredibly ornate, and I’ve heard she commands a minimum of $10,000 per cake!

Anyway, on the cover of her book is a cake called “Baroque in Patent Leather”.  Click Here to see what I’m talking about.  I love it! I’ve known of other people who have challenged themselves to reproduce the cake, mostly from trade forums and groups I’m a member of. Recently, I noticed a reproduction of the cake on another MN designer’s Website.

Because of the complexity involved, the fact that I’m not actually getting paid to do it, and also the wedding show I’ve got looming next month, I’ve decided to do it as a “dummy” cake.. the prep work will be murder. I can’t even imagine how much hassle it will be to carve that out of styrofoam - It would be no problem out of cake, but for the previously mentioned reasons, I’d really like this one to stick around for awhile!  So, I’m heading out this morning to pick up the styrofoam and gold, and will be carving it later today Haven’t decided if I’ll make the chalice at the top - she puts those goblets on EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK. Well, not “every” one, but pretty darn close. I don’t like the look. Maybe I’ll make something else for the top.

So, let’s see if I really can do pretty much anything on a cake! Cross your fingers! It’ll be obscenely labor intensive, but I think I have the skills to do it. Not so sure about the patience! :)
