Ok, so I ended up getting a little sidetracked – we have a wedding show coming up this weekend, so I’ve been racing around getting everything ready for it. I DO intend to have this “challenge” cake on display at the show, so I had to get cracking!
Here is the “cake” after I carved it, covered it in fondant, added the pastillage striping, and did the initial royal icing work.
In this shot, I’ve completely finished the royal icing ornamentation. At this point, it hadn’t hit me yet just how sick in the head this exercise would turn out to be:
At this point, I’d like to mention that if I were at all intelligent – much as I like to think I am, this proved me wrong – I would have colored the royal icing BEFORE piping it on. I didn’t, as I was following directions. Sigh. I should have learned by now – not only is following directions NOT FUN… but I can usually come up with a better/faster/nicer way to do something if I ignore directions.
Here is the final update of the day, as I was getting ready to toss the cake. This shows a minimal amount of the paint work that went into this:
As of right now, I’m almost finished painting these top 4 layers. I still have to carve, cover, ice, and paint the bottom layer. Will post final updates in a day or two!
