Recently, I signed on to sponsor cakes for the Make a Wish Foundation. I was debating whether or not I should blog about it. Don’t get me wrong, I think what *they* do is super cool.. I just didn’t want to come off as.. well, I don’t know. “Hey, look at me, I’m being all philanthropic here!”.
Well, I just delivered my second cake, and this time actually got to meet most of the people who work at the Minnesota office. It was after meeting all these cool people, and seeing firsthand more of what they do, that I decided I should go ahead and blog about it after all.
As you more than likely know, the Make a Wish foundation grants “Wishes” to terminally ill children. Not having dealt with them before – I’ve never personally known anyone in need of their work – I had a vague idea of sending kids to Disney World and whatever. Never really thought of the work behind the scenes, or the actual logistics of it all or anything. So, the visit was pretty eye opening!
First of all, everyone in the office is super cool, very friendly, and seemed VERY creative! The office is adorned with photos of and artwork by their “wish kids”. It was cool to see and hear about some of the past wishes they’ve granted. Some of these kids are very creative in what they wanted!
Also, I was surprised by the level of detail involved with wishes. Today’s cake was for a kid named David, who – I am happy to report – is apparently completely healthy now. Back when he applied for a Wish, he was to undergo some serious surgery (ies?), but came through them alright!
David is a shark *freak*. Apparently, he knows absolutely everything about Sharks, and his wish was to go to a Shark Research facility in California. I was actually kind of intimidated as I dropped off the cake – I was picturing this pint size shark genius taking one look at the cake, and loudly informing everyone around that the dorsal fin was shaped wrong, or something to that effect. LOL!
Anyway, I’m off track here. The thing I thought was really cool about the whole thing – you’d think that just arranging to send David to California for his Shark adventure would be mind blowing enough, right? Wrong. Then he gets this crazy sculpted Great White shark cake (that was where I came in!).. but they also put together this backpack filled with all kinds of shark related gear. SO cool – and such attention to detail!
Anyway, I just thought that the whole set up was so cool, I wanted to give them a plug. If you have any kind of product or service that could be of use, or just want to donate cash.. check out their website (www.wishmn.org), and give them a call! They totally have no idea that I’m doing this, LOL!
It really is a great feeling to be a part of bringing such joy to a child’s life, even just one kid at a time.
