Fondant Rant

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

I’ll make this as short and sweet as possible.. mostly because it’s Sunday on Labor Day weekend, and I don’t want to spend a ton of time working. LOL.
Anyway, the family and I just got back from the State Fair, and saw something that horrified me so badly, that I think it needs to be addressed ASAP.We saw a few minutes of a cake demonstration, as we were walking through. The person was talking about fondant, and showing how to work with it. At one point, she mentioned about how anyone can go to “Joann’s or Michael’s” to pick some up, and the feeling of dread hit. Best. Cake Topper. EVER.

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Ok, so I’m pretty much anti-cake topper. (By that, I mean the figurines.. I’m ok with tasteful florals, etc). To me, figuring toppers harken back to the days of the bad 80s cake.. you know, with matched sets of bridesmaids and groomsmen standing on awful plastic stairs jutting down from the main cake? Ugh.
Then my good friend Karen mailed me a clip from a magazine – a full page ad for the Paris hotel in Vegas. I just about fell off my chair!! See below.

Cake Topper

Is that not just the COOLEST topper ever?? My first thought was “I want one!”. No real plans for it, I just have to own one!

So, I did some quick googling, and found it! http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/paris-las-vegas/casino-misc/cake-topper-detail.html

Had to share!

Wedding Cakes : A Design Source.. again!

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Woo!

Just received the next issue of Wedding Cakes: A Design Source mag in the mail (I hate waiting the extra month or so for it to get to book stores, so I order it direct from the UK now!).. and we have not 1, but *3* cakes pictured inside!

Still wondering what happened with the color of the third photo (on page 112), but whatever. Exciting anyway!

Pavlova

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Pavlovas are my absolute favorite dessert of all time! They’re basically a type of large meringue – one which is crispy on the outside, and like a marshmallow on the inside! – heaped with whipped cream, then topped with fruit. Does it get any better? No. No, it doesn’t!

Nice light texture, and a wonderful way to enjoy fresh fruit. Perfect summer dessert for entertaining, and this is a really easy recipe for anyone. A quick head’s up though – if your meringue is not cracked by the time you remove it from the oven, it will likely crack at some other point, and will almost certainly crack when you start garnishing. Don’t worry! Totally normal, no one will notice or care! (more…)
