I’ll make this as short and sweet as possible.. mostly because it’s Sunday on Labor Day weekend, and I don’t want to spend a ton of time working. LOL. Anyway, the family and I just got back from the State Fair, and saw something that horrified me so badly, that I think it needs to be addressed ASAP.We saw a few minutes of a cake demonstration, as we were walking through. The person was talking about fondant, and showing how to work with it. At one point, she mentioned about how anyone can go to “Joann’s or Michael’s” to pick some up, and the feeling of dread hit.
Yup. She was working with Wilton fondant, with the box prominently displayed. Gag.
The thing is.. Wilton fondant isn’t really edible. Oh sure, it CLAIMS to be edible.. but don’t believe everything you read. Wilton fondant is a pretty accurate representation of what sawdust might taste like if you sweetened it and added lard. Horrible, horrible stuff.. and I was pretty shocked to see someone “in the industry” representing like that.
So please.. take this as a public service announcement. If you are making a fake cake.. by all means, use Wilton fondant. It’s cheap, it’s convenient.. and probably tastes a little better than the styrofoam you’re putting it on.
If you’re making a cake for someone you DON’T hate with a passion.. just steer way clear of Wilton fondant. Buy some Satin Ice or Pettinice from a cake supply place.. I hear those are way more edible. I’m pretty sure that the Wilton fondant is 100% responsible for some of the bad rap fondant has. Someone tries Wilton – because it IS so convenient – and figures that is what fondant tastes like. Ugh.
Edited to add: I guess I should mention here.. we don’t use any commercially available fondant. We make ours fresh for each order, using nothing but marshmallows, icing sugar, color, and sometimes flavor. Kinda hard to make that taste bad!
That’s about it. Hope you’re having (had?) a great holiday weekend!
