I confess. I’m a nerd. I married a nerdy geek, and most of my friends are some combination of the two
Lately, we’ve had a run of orders for geeky / nerdy cakes, and I LOVE it! There’s a wedding cake in December that I’m very much looking forward to doing (Super Mario!), and a World of Warcraft groom’s cake next summer that is going to be *awesome*. This weekend was the “Week of the Geek”, with not one, but THREE nerd/geek cakes! (more…)

Fruity Glazed Popcorn
Monday, September 15th, 2008This was the first recipe I ever had published, back when I was in grade 5! I used to make this for bake sales in my front yard, as gifts, and whatever. It’s pretty addictive – especially the grape and pineapple flavors, IMO! This was first published in my class newsletter, and a few years later in a fundraising recipe book.
This was way before the internet, so it’s kinda weird to see some really close variations out there now. I remember that I got the base recipe from a friend’s mother, then tweaked it some how. Something wasn’t working right.. argh! So long ago! I’m reading the fundraiser recipe book.. kinda fun to walk down memory lane!

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup sugar
1 small package Jello, any flavor
10 cups popped popcorn
Melt butter and corn syrup together in a heavy pan. Add sugar and Jello, bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Let boil for 5 minutes, then pour over popcorn. Mix well. Spread popcorn out on a greased cookie sheet, and allow to cool.
First Magazine Shoot!
Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
Hey all,So today was an event I’ve been looking forward to for a few weeks – I was asked to provide a cake for a Minnesota Bride photo shoot! This would be my first magazine shoot, so that’s a cool milestone.
The idea was to make something “spring” oriented, and they requested a new version of one of my recent wedding cakes – the piped meringue flowers one.. only in bright colors. How fun! Not fun to pipe, just fun to see it come together. I wonder if they read my blog entry on the first one, and how much I hate piping flowers? They’d have to be sadists, in that case, LOL.

While it’ll be cool to see the finished layout, I don’t have a ton to report on how the day went. I dropped the cake off early this morning, then had to hightail it over for a physical therapy appointment. (No good news to report on that front, I’m afraid!). Then I had to bide my time until I was to pick up the cake at the end of the shoot.
