Marie’s Favorite Things – Holiday Giveaways 2.0!

A couple years ago, we did our first “Marie’s Favorite Things” giveaway on Celebration Generation. It was a ton of fun, being able to get some of my readers hooked on some of my favorite things (Imaginative title, eh?). We had to skip last year, on account of still being busy with tornado repairs, but we’re back!

I love sharing information about the stuff I lust/obsess over as it is. Add in some awesome giveaways? I’m SO down with that. I just know of so many awesome people, businesses, and products – thought it’d be fun to compile a few of them into a blog post, to make Christmas shopping easier for my readers. Plus, it’s always good to support fellow small businesses!

First, a bit of disclosure. I chose all of these items, as things I genuinely love. I have received no compensation or free product for recommending any of these items. It’s my pleasure to introduce these products to you, and sincerely hope you’ll love them as much as I do!

For the giveaways: For each item, there are 3 ways you can enter. Twitter, Facebook, and by commenting here. You are free to enter once per entry type, per giveaway. That is to say, you are allowed to enter up to 3 times for each of the giveaways featured here. Winners are determined by randomized draw from entries, all prizes ship directly from the business offering them, to the winner. Please see each individual description for any particulars, restrictions, etc for entering. Enjoy, and good luck!

1. Dragon Chow Dice Bags

I’m a big fan of utility. With me, substance wins over style, no exceptions. I don’t care about trends, and am always comfortable in jeans, a t shirt, and runners. I think high heels were invented by a sadist, and I want no part of that business….

Sometimes, though, utility and style actually manage to cross paths. With “Geeky Lyndsay”’s help, not only do they cross paths, they hook up spectacularly and spawn some adorably functional offspring: funky dice bags!

I may not be a gamer, but these bags are genius. They’re flat on the bottom, to stand up without external aid. They have secure draw strings, and come in many colors and patterns. Jalapenos, constellations, flames, barbed wire, snowflakes, the TARDIS… and they’re reversible! It’s like getting 2 bags in one.

Some even come with a pencil strap, and are tall enough to accommodate writing implements. What more could you want? I may need to buy some up to store my lip balm collection in! Too cute! Order yours on Lyndsay’s site, www.dragonchow.com

Lyndsay has graciously offered up a single “standard” dice bag for our giveaway! To win:

2. Prairie Dawn Lip Balm

You probably don’t know this about me, but I’m a bit of a lip balm connoisseur. Actually, given that I have a collection of only slightly less than 100 tubes, pots, and mini balls of lip balm, maybe “lip balm fiend” could also be an acceptable title!

However, you may have gathered that I’m a fan of flavor by now… that more than likely plays in to my lip balm obsession. A good lip balm is a sensual experience.. Flavor, scent, the texture of it on your lips. A GREAT lip balm is a marriage of all 3 elements, and is an oddly rare find. I found my holy grail of lip balms on a trip to Niagara Falls a few years ago, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since.

Prairie Dawn lip balms come in 4 flavors, and are 100% natural. I can’t even tell you how much I love the stuff, words fail me here. These are the smoothest, silkiest lip balms I’ve ever come across – it’s like they melt on contact with your lips. The taste/scent? Phenomenal. My favorites are Lime and Black Licorice, which are potent enough AND true to reality. I honestly can’t think of anything more I could ask for in a lip balm (aside from having a HUGE supply of them on hand!)

Prairie Dawn lip balms are made by a small company in Alberta, Canada. While I found my initial set at a Shopper’s Drug Mart in Niagara Falls, they’re not really “on the shelf” items locally. The good news is that they’re available by online order, at www.prairiedawn.ca! $4 each, $2 shipping anywhere in North America (CAD), regardless of how many you order. Seriously, stock up. They make great stocking stuffers, and you’ll have a hard time giving them away once you try them. They really are THAT awesome!

Prairie Dawn has generously offered up a pack of 4 lip balms as a giveaway to my readers. That’s one each of Sweet Orange, Lime, Peppermint, and Black Licorice! To win:

3. The Pumpkin Geek

Here’s another case of a company that I’ve already blogged my love for!

I first met Alex, “The Pumpkin Geek” on Twitter. Back then, I was blown away by the photos he had of pumpkins he’d carved. You see, Alex has a unique niche – using craft foam pumpkins, he makes the most ridiculously intricate carvings of pumpkins that you can imagine… most of which feature a geeky theme. Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter.. even House. If you can think it, Alex can carve it!

For instance, you could have him carve the image of Hugh Jackman as “Wolverine”, as he did for me. *swoon*. I digress…

Pumpkins may be considered more seasonally “autumn”, than as a traditional Christmas type gift, but so what? Awesomeness like this is timeless, for ALL seasons, really. Even in the middle of a hot and nasty summer, I was able to marvel at the fine, finicky detail that my little pumpkin carve features. Oh, but I definitely did display my Wolverine Jack(man) O’Lantern proudly at Halloween, for all of the neighborhood kids (of all ages!) to oggle!

Anyway. Yes. You should totally order a custom carve of your loved one’s favorite Tv, movie, or comic book character. Maybe even of the recipient themselves… and for the slightly narcissistic gift giver, you can always have you OWN mug carved into a pumpkin! The possibilities are endless!

Alex is offering up this “Loki” medium sized carve to one lucky fan! To enter:

4. Kitty City

My husband and I have been big fans of Kitty City since last summer.

We were displaced from our house by a tornado, living in a cheapo hotel, and separated from our cats for the first 6 weeks of repair. A kind friend of ours gave us some cash with the instructions to “take care of the cats” with it. In our shocked state, we wandered through a department and came upon Kitty City for the first time – and spent all of the “Take care of your cats” money on various modular cat structure kits.

It was therapeutic for us to assemble it, in our newly cleaned bedroom. We were still weeks away from being able to move in, and to move the cats in – but assembling that structure, and having THAT to look forward to? It helped a lot. Not only was it a great(and fun!) distraction, it was really healing to be creating something amidst all that destruction.

The cats loved it, and still do. We still add to it from time to time.. and each time we do, they act like it’s a big, brand new adventure. Also, it’s a ridiculous amount of fun for us, going through all of the bits and pieces, and deciding the new layout. Definitely an toy for adults, as well as their cats! Here is ours:

Anyway! You see the structure over to the left? That is a Kitty City Starter Kit from the new “Steel Claw” line … and SportPet Designs has graciously offered it up to one lucky fan!

5. Extreme Sandbox

My husband is such a GUY sometimes. Recently, we were set up at a trade show. He’d wandered off to see the other vendors, while I finished setting up our booth. When he came back, it was with a bounce in his step, and a BIG gleam in his eye. Apparently someone was set up with heavy equipment, promoting his business – Extreme Sandbox.

Forget the Tonka toys, this business was one that allows customers of all types to fulfill their childhood fantasies of using really, REALLY big equipment to dig around in the dirt. Beyond that, for an additional cost you can WRECK STUFF. Yep. That would get him excited… so, we checked it out.

Randy, the owner, is awesome. Super easy to get along with, and he’s hilarious. His sense of humor can lead to a bit of a surreal experience, as he looks a lot like Jason Sudeikis. Yes. Anyway, the joking around definitely enhanced the whole experience, which left my husband Porter giddy for hours after the fact. Click here to see a highlights video of his experience. Also, a gallery on our Facebook page!

Porter’s not the only one enamored with the whole thing. Extreme Sandbox is the #1 rated Twin Cities attraction on Trip Advisor, based on reviews. They also have a Youtube channel full of fun videos.

Definitely an awesome way to treat someone to a once in a lifetime break from the norm – an amazing Christmas gift! Oh, and hey – they were generous enough to donate a 1 hour “Mini Sandbox Adventure” to one lucky fan!

Still reading? Good! I have a few final giveaways for you!

Not content to just offer up giveaways for all of these other cool companies and products, I want to join in the fun, too! Plus – I may be a little biased here – but my books really are some of my favorite things! Between my writing and my husband’s photography, they really do represent a labor of love, in more than one sense! (awww…)

So, a few book giveaways:

6. Two Cookbooks & a Tornado Memoir

First up, a gift pack of three of our most popular books: “The Spirited Baker: Intoxicating Desserts & Potent Potables”, “Evil Cake Overlord: Ridiculously Delicious Cakes”, and “Twisted, A Minneapolis Tornado Memoir”. Click here for full descriptions of each of the books.

  1. I want to win the Dragon Chow Dice bag because who wouldn’t want to? Have you seen them? So cute! Perfect place for dice with great designs!

I want to win the Prairie Dawn Lip Balm because one can never have too much lip balm, am I right?

I want to win the Kitty City starter kit because my Tortellini definitely needs a place and thing of his own since the Monkey (read: monster puppy) joined the family.

  2. I would love to win the Extreme Sandbox! It would definitely be an awesome gift for the girlfriend. She’s an architectural drafter but always wants to experience the fun of getting her hands dirty with the machines that do the digging.

  3. I would like to win a Kitty City starter kit because my kitties now spend most of their time in my bedroom! They were indoor cats, then were outdoor cats, then were indoor/outdoor cats, but now they prefer to stay indoors.

We try to give them their own play time throughout the house, but they are NOT fans of the dogs, even though the dogs are friendly and the rambunctious ones are kenneled at night, so they spend most of their time in my bedroom.

Lastly, we are in a major cleaning process (= dehoarding) and rearranging our bedroom. This has caused some disgruntled kitties, as they do NOT like having no boxes left in the closet to explore, and Mama’s Mountain of Mess is shifting and disappearing.

While they have generally been good sports about it and continue to use the litter box instead of my bed, I would like to reward them for their patience and sharing their domain (my bedroom) at times with various and sundry other species… 2 sets of baby chicks that grew in a kennel in my bedroom until big enough to go outside; a stray shepherd puppy we picked up in a warehouse area; and most recently, two stray chihuahua mix adolescents who love nothing better than to see how close they can get to the cats when their backs are turned.

  4. I want to win a Dragon Chow dice bag! I recently joined a gaming group and have yet to find a fun/awesome/nerdy/spiffy bag to carry around my pretty pretty dice.

  5. I want to win Prairie Dawn Lip Balm because my lips get soooooo dry during these Minnesota winters and am similarly obsessed with finding THE perfect lip balm.

  6. I very, very seriously want to win the KITTY CITY STARTER KIT! My spoiled kitties need an awesome jungle gym to frolic in/on/around. I’ve seen the Kitty City items before and coveted them, but never seem to have the extra money around to give my kitties the palace/habitrail they deserve. 🙂

  7. I very much am hoping to win the Kitty City Starter Kit because we adopted a new (adult) cat from a rescue group, and she’s having trouble settling in to the house with the resident feline. It was suggested we get Kitty City or something similar to encourage them to play together, but I can’t afford to buy them something this nice on my salary.

  8. I want to win the Prairie Dawn Lip Balm because, who are we kidding, lip balm rocks! I have to have one everywhere I go. In the winter, especially, because it gets so dry and I just can’t stand dry, crackly lips. I have a few in my main purse, one in my backpack, laptop bag, coat pocket… I even keep one on my desk and lip balm has a reserved spot in my car, easily accessible at all times from the driver’s seat. Yup! Lip balm lover for life!!

  9. I would love to win the Loki pumpkin so I can kick my husband out of bed and snuggle it instead. However living in Canada I realize it may be too difficult to ship it here. I really love it though! (Note: I would be willing to pay for shipping if I did win it.)

  10. I would love a chance to win The Pumpkin Geek’s Loki Carve! Not only is Alex one of the most talented carvers I’ve seen but he makes so many wonderful carves it’s hard to even think about picking favorites. This particular pumpkin I know will go to an exceptional home to a friend of mine who is an enthusiastic Loki cosplayer! I believe she would love it like it was her own little tesseract! <3

  11. Id love to win the prairie dawn lip balms…Im a lip balm connoisseur too and Im looking to try some new great quality ones (and Canadian made is even better!)

  12. I want to win a Kitty City Starter Kit! for my sister. She lost her hubby to a sudden heart attack this past year and has just purchased a new smaller 1.5 story home. It has the most perfect spot for her cats to hang out. The kitty city looks like the ideal furnishing for “their” room. And this would give me gift ideas for ad-ons.

  13. I want to win the ExtremeSandbox Adventure because That Guy needs practice with big machinery if we’re ever to excavate and build our dream Hobbit Home.

  14. The only items that I would list as a MUST HAVE, are the cookbooks, and I already have them. For those of you who are not familiar with them, they are amazing. The other items are definite keepers, but the cookbooks are my favorites!

  15. I want to win the Dragon Chow Dice bag because I recently acquired dice that need a bag, and these are TOO cool! Of course, deciding between Purple Dark Magic and Running River could cause some overload… but I’ll cope, really, I will! 🙂

  16. I too am a bit of a lip balm fanatic, though I’ve got a rotation of about 10 rather than 100. I’d love to try something new, especially if it’s as great as you say. Hook me up with the Prairie Dawn lip balm!

  17. I’d be the happiest girl ever if I won the Extreme Sandbox Adventure! I am across the street from the big Interchange project downtown and could easily watch the construction for hours. All the while wondering why I have a desk job. 🙂

  18. I want to win a Kitty City starter kit because my cats would wig the hell out having something that awesome to destroy…um, I mean…play on! (And I need it because they destroyed their cat tree….)

  19. I want to win a Kitty City starter kit because I have two cats who don’t really like each other and they fight all the time over my one kitty tree, which has been scratched to shreds over the years! One of my cats, Sophie, is 12 1/2 years old, and I bought the tree for her when we moved into our house 5 1/2 years ago. (We have since lost the house, which put her into an anxious funk for several months after we first moved.) The second cat, Paddy, is 3 1/2, used to be a stray — so she’s very active — and is a polydactyl, so she has extra claws — thus, we really need it, but I could never afford anything like this as a single mom/grad student. I’ll bet I could afford add-ons though…. 😉

  20. I also want to win the books, Marie! I have been wanting to try your potent potables every time you’ve described or mentioned them online, and I’ve wanted to read your tornado memoir since it came out!

  21. And I would love to win the lip balms because I live in Arizona, and boy do we need them! Especially in the winter, when the electric heat turns on, and I put on chapsticks over and over and over and it doesn’t seem to work! I especially like the idea of trying all the flavors — and I want to try them with my boyfriend and see which one(s) he likes the best too! 😉

  22. I entered to win both the Kitty City Modular Starter Kit >^..^<
and the Extreme Sandbox Adventure. 🙂

We live with 6 formerly ferral, furry cat kids who came to live with us and they would LOVE more climbing space.
The Extreme Sandbox Adventure would be a perfect gift for my husband who worked in the concrete construction industry for 35 years. He would be in his GLORY again!

    Thank You!

  23. I would like to win the Prairie Dawn lip balm because I too am addicted to cool lip balm and with winter coming I want to add more to my collection

  24. I’d really love to win your Two Cookbooks and Tornado Memoir!!

I’ve already been thoroughly enjoying your Evil Cake Overlord cookbook; the new copy would be a gift to a friend who also likes to bake totally awsome cakes. I’m ready to expand my skills with your Spirited Baker recipes. After following your blogs about coping with the aftermath of that horrible tornado, I’m eager to read the full version in your new book 🙂

  25. I would love to win the cookbook/memoir pack. I’ve told my sis (the baker in the family) about the cookbooks and would love to share them with her. I’d keep the memoir, and after reading it would most likely donate it to the library I work at to be added to the collection…

  26. I’d love to win City City!!
We moved across the country and are still settling in. My kitties do not have anything to climb on and one of my kitties cannot use the scratching post, she knocks it down They love the house and backyard but are looking to me to play with them all the time. This would be a great activity center for them!

  27. So yeah, it’s that time of the year. The time of the year when my lips try desperately to claw themselves off of my face and move to Florida because I need chapstick so badly. I would love some Prairie Dawn chapstick for sure. And I’m sure my lips would love it too.

  28. The two cookbooks and the tornado memoir would be a great thing to win I think because while I am a pretty good cook, I tend to cook without recipes. While that’s fine about 75% of the time, there are still times that I subject my child and fiance to my “experiments” which have gone very, very horrendously wrong. I also think reading the book about the tornado would be a great way to reflect on that awful day and see someone else’s view on it.

  29. We rescued our dog Pi from the mean streets of North Minneapolis. We’ve had to fight for him in more than one way but it’s all been worth it. He went from a scared, shaking, drowned sewer rat to a handsome, Vin Diesel, Lion of a dog. From cowered behind the couch to chasing and playing with the family cat Arial. He’s getting so brave that her hiding spots are slowly being depleted. The Kitty City starter set would be a fabulous addition in her arsenal I’m sure.

  30. Now about that Extreme Sandbox Adventure. I don’t have an exact reason as to why I think this would be freakinawesomeamazingness except that it would be fun. I mean seriously I remember playing in our sandbox back in Kasson, MN when I was little. Pushing around the turds from the neighborhood cats and loving every minute of that. (Possible conclusion of why I’m such a weirdo today) This would just be a nice escape from reality and my awful, horrendous, drug dealer neighbors. Oh yes I think I could totally put this to use.

  31. I’m hoping to win either of the sewing books. I attempted to go to school at two different schools for similar things and dropped out both times because I didn’t feel like I was learning anything. I think I should just try and learn on my own. Stupid penchant for autodidactism. 😉

  32. I want to win the Kitty City for my rambuncous kitties. They run and chase around the house, but they don’t have many resting spots. I feel the Kitty City would let them know that this space is for them.

  33. I would like to win the cookbooks an tornado book as I need to learn to cook/bake better and I hear only good things about the tornado book.
