First Magazine Shoot!

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Hey all,
So today was an event I’ve been looking forward to for a few weeks - I was asked to provide a cake for a Minnesota Bride photo shoot! This would be my first magazine shoot, so that’s a cool milestone.

The idea was to make something “spring” oriented, and they requested a new version of one of my recent wedding cakes - the piped meringue flowers one.. only in bright colors. How fun! Not fun to pipe, just fun to see it come together. I wonder if they read my blog entry on the first one, and how much I hate piping flowers? They’d have to be sadists, in that case, LOL.

While it’ll be cool to see the finished layout, I don’t have a ton to report on how the day went. I dropped the cake off early this morning, then had to hightail it over for a physical therapy appointment. (No good news to report on that front, I’m afraid!). Then I had to bide my time until I was to pick up the cake at the end of the shoot.

Oh! There was one interesting thing. When I went back to pick it up, I *had* to sneak a peek at the other cakes.. gotta see what I’m up against, right? Anyway, the interesting thing was that the cake that The Buttercream Collection had submitted was actually a fondant cake! I’d recently heard that all of their display cakes are now fondant as well… So, I guess I’d like to welcome Buttercream to the realm of fondant!

Hopefully this (assumed) new expansion of their offerings will mean that we’ll all see less misconceptions about fondant perpetuated by them! Fondant is such a great medium to work with, I’m glad to see them - those who were the loudest about how awful it is - embrace the virtues of fondant! I guess they’ve found one of the good tasting brands of fondant that are available. Woo! The last big bastion of anti-fondant sentiment has been won over! (Can you tell how much I hated reading all that misleading “all fondant tastes bad!” nonsense? SO glad that’ll be coming to an end!)

Anyway, that’s about it. It should be interesting to see how the market evolves over the next while. If Buttercream is now offering fondant cakes, I wonder if any of the other mass-market cake producers will follow suit? Could fondant cakes soon be available at Walmart? I guess time will tell. Like I said though.. should be interesting!

Wedding Cakes : A Design Source.. again!

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Woo!

Just received the next issue of Wedding Cakes: A Design Source mag in the mail (I hate waiting the extra month or so for it to get to book stores, so I order it direct from the UK now!).. and we have not 1, but *3* cakes pictured inside!

Still wondering what happened with the color of the third photo (on page 112), but whatever. Exciting anyway!

International Fame! (Or something like it, anyway!)

A few months ago, I submitted some photos to my favorite cake related publication - “Wedding Cakes: A Design Source”. It’s a magazine out of the UK and is basically.. cake porn. LOL. Hundreds of gorgeous cakes in each issue.. and pretty much nothing but! I make a point to buy every issue, and like to have them on hand for cake consults - it’s great to have such a variety of techniques in one spot! Very handy.

Anyway.. received an email this morning. They selected some of my work to be published in the next issue, which comes out tomorrow! I have no idea which photo(s) they picked, or how many.. but I find this pretty cool. First time I’ve had my work in a magazine!

So, I called the Barnes and Noble to find out when it will *actually* be in stores on this
continent.. most importantly, their store. They have *no* idea. Sigh. Looks like it could be anytime in the next few weeks. I’ll definitely have to keep my eye out!

For those interested, it will be in issue 27. Issue 26 is currently on shelves, it has a pink cover. The new one will have a tealish cover. Here’s the image they sent me for promotional purposes:

So.. check it out!

The following appeared as part of the “What’s Cooking”/”Front Burner” page of the Taste Section today:

 She’s fond of fondant

For Marie Porter, it’s been a natural progression from designing wedding gowns to wedding florals and now to wedding cakes. And what cakes! She’s parlayed her bartender skills into boozy concoctions such as Southern Belle (peaches and Southern Comfort) and Bananas Foster (crème de banana and rum), but also offers an unusual chai spice cake, along with variations on more traditional chocolate and lemon cakes. Her website, www. celebrationgenerationcakes. com, includes some eye-popping photos of her fondant designs, including a “Coach Bag” and a brown-and-green coating that resembles military camouflage. Prices (minimum order to serve 100) begin at $450. Celebration Generation Cakes also offers cookies, tarts and truffles. She’s based in Princeton, Minn., but serves the Twin Cities. Call 612-388-9409 or e-mail cakes@ celebrationgeneration.com.

 Kare OnLive Cake

A couple of days ago, I participated in the Kare 11 OnLive Potluck.  Crazy amounts of fun!

A few of their regulars met at the studio for some online/OnLive chat, and a potluck to follow.  I knew it was going to be a lot of fun, but I didn’t know I’d be filming a commercial, OR that I’d walk out with my very own catchphrase!

The following is the text article Kare 11 posted on their site, to accompany the news article they covered today.  The quotes are fairly paraphrased, but you get the idea anyway :)

About the cake: “Raven”

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Raven
Well, this cake is less than 24 hours old, and we’ve already had a ton of questions about it. Figured I’d post some information here, for those curious.

This cake was made as a “thank you” to Kare 11 for doing the piece on me. “Raven” is a black labrador retriever who figures prominently in one of their local shows - “Minnesota Bound”. The dog is kind of… iconic.  At the end of the show, the host even jokes that she is the “star” of the show, which is about Minnesota outdoor life. One of our cats (Rat) LOVES the show - especially when the birds are on the tv.
