3 Cakers – myself, Sheela from Cake Eater Bakery, and Thea from Perfect Day Cakes were each given photos of 2 dresses to work with, and very little in the way of guidelines , restrictions, or TIME (lol!), and set free to run wild with our imaginations.

Here are the two photos I was initially provided with:

The blue dress is from Blasphemina’s Closet. For this dress, L’Etoile requested something crazy, bright, and mad-hatterish, as they wanted to play up the “Alice in Wonderland” feel of it. The grey/orange dress is from Calpurnia Peach. Here’s what we came up with:

So yeah, that was an interesting experience. I really liked the way that the grey and orange cake went so well with the Calpurnia Peach dress… but, if I had my time back, I think I would have pushed to do the other one blue and black, to better coordinate with the assigned dress.

Cool though.

Back in January, you may have seen our tweets about sending our Chai cake to New York City for a *big* magazine photo shoot. We’ve been pretty silent about which magazine, but just received word that subscribers have received their issues… So…

CHECK OUT THE MAY 2010 ISSUE OF “EVERY DAY WITH RACHAEL RAY”. WE’RE IN IT! FOR REAL. (Yes, I totally think that deserved caps!) We were selected as one of a small handful of wedding cake bakeries around the country that feature unique and interesting cake flavors. Our most popular flavor, Chai, is the one chosen to represent Celebration Generation in the article! SO excited! Can’t wait to see it!

I digress…

Anyway, a few months ago I got together with one of my favorite people, Jean from Violet’s Flowers to work on a project. We were both involved in putting together an article for an industry magazine, Flowers &. Flowers & Magazine is put out by Teleflora.

I wrote the magazine article, which was all about how to incorporate fresh flowers with high end fondant cake design. Written, of course, from the point of view of a caker.

I had an absolute blast designing and creating 4 cakes with Jean, which were then photographed by my husband, Michael from Happenstance Photography. Each cake was loosely themed around a season:

Winter: White cake with snowflakes and LED lights all over it, separated by lush blooms in shades of pink and white

Spring: Hot pink cake with flame colored tulips, kumquats, and split leaf philodendron.

Summer: Waves of white fondant wrapped around round tiers, hand painted green leaf accents, with fresh purple Vanda orchids “glued” on with frosting.

Autumn: Pale cocoa fondant, handpainted with orange-tinted cocoa. It was surrounded by a “cage” mad eof curly willow, and accented with chocolate colored fresh cymbidium orchids.

Anyway, the article came out at the beginning of October, and I’m THRILLED with it. 8 full pages, large gorgeous photos, and everything!
