Pi Day Pinata!

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

With Pi Day (March 14) coming up, my husband and I decided to just go crazy with it. We’ll blog about the festivities later, but for now… I want to blog about the piece de resistance.. our PInata! Neither of us had ever been involved with making a pinata before, and it sounded like a fun – and wholly appropriate – challenge!

This would be a fun project for any couple or family to do together. Or, hey, any pi-obsessed individual… but I will say that two sets of hands REALLY helped it go faster, and there were many times where the extra set of hands helped with handling.

Of course, the principles of design that we utilized in the creation of our PInata could be applied to many different themes and shapes of pinatas, so go nuts with it. If it’s not in the cards for you to make one for this year’s Pi day, consider other occasions that would/could call for a Pinata.

Traditionally, it seems that you’re supposed to paper mache a balloon, and use that as your base. We couldn’t think of any possible way that would fit with our ideas, so we had to Macguyver a solution. Here is what we came up with. (Warning, this will be a fairly photo-heavy blog entry!) (more…)

Yay! Mardi Gras!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Happy Fat Tuesday, everyone!

Though I’ve never been to New Orleans during the Mardi Gras celebrations, this time of year holds a special place in my heart for a couple of reasons.

For one, it brings back a lot of memories of a trip to New Orleans (in the summertime, though!) a few years ago (Pre-Katrina). A bunch of friends and I stayed in the French Quarter, and man.. what a crazy amount of culture is packed into one place! The sights, the sounds.. the food! Great times. I’d love to go back sometime, hopefully during the Mardi Gras celebrations. Sounds like a ton of crazy fun.

Anyway, more importantly, it reminds me of getting engaged to my husband. Sounds kinda weird, huh? It gets better. He proposed to me as the result of a very famous New Orleans sandwich – the Muffaletta!

He’d never heard of them before, but had a rabid love of olives. I remembered the delicious sandwich I’d experienced at Central Grocery in New Orleans, and decided that he HAD to try one. Mufalettas appear to be pretty hard to come by here in Minnesota, so I made him one, from scratch. He went out and bought my ring the next day! LOL.

So, in honor of Fat Tuesday, I’ve published my muffaletta recipe here. No guarantee that you’ll have the same sparkly results from serving it (it ended up being the most expesive sandwich he’d ever had, lol!), but if you like olives, I’m sure you’ll love it!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Ya know, I haven’t been married all THAT long – I’m not a cranky old fart yet or anything! – but sometimes I find it kinda hard to get into Valentine’s Day. It just feels so contrived, ya know? I’m not into crappy heart shaped chocolate (I’ve managed to spoil both my husband AND myself in making truffles from scratch!), or fighting to get reservations at overcrowded restaurants.. and truth be told, I don’t even really like roses. Much more of a lilies person, myself!

So this year, feeling like we should “do SOMETHING”, we looked for something new and cool to try to commemorate the occasion, contrived or not. (That sounds so snotty, now that I read it again. I should elaborate.. I’m much more in the “show appreciation and enjoy life with each other year round!” camp, so we do special things together often enough that Vday seems.. sorta weird. Does that make sense?)

I came across some information for a Valentine’s event happening on Feb 13, and jumped on it! It turned out to be the best Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had, so I’d love to share. (more…)

ROCKSTAR!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

This weekend was insane. Not only was it the weekend of a HUGE wedding cake I’ve been looking forward to doing for almost a year (and the coolest wedding cake ever, in my not so humble opinion!), it was also the weekend of the Twin Cities Chocolate Extravaganza, and the Twin City Bridal ICON awards. I had submitted 2 entries to the Chocolate show, and was nominated for an ICON award.First, the cake!

Brooke and Richard were awesome to deal with right from the start. They had met in a library, and that became a central theme for their wedding. Their wedding cake was a huge stack of their favorite books, with an accounting calculator as the topper, and included 2 green fondant “book worms”, which represented the bride and groom. Very cute! Here’s a picture before the topper:

The shame is that this wedding was too late to enter in my ICON awards portfolio.. I have a few really cool ones coming up that would have been perfect for that!

Then came the chocolate show.

Not much to say here. I had to slap together my entries, on account of too much other stuff to do. I wasn’t really happy with my work, and wasn’t surprised when I only got a certificate, no medal. LOL. Clients come first, though! Next year I’ll try to allot time to deal with my entry.

Finally, the ICON awards!

I’ve been looking forward to these for a few months now! The guys at Twin City Bridal always put on a good show with anything they do, and I’ve never really be involved with anything like this.

To be considered for nomination, local weding businesses had to submit a portfolio, write ups, etc. These were sent directly to an accounting firm, who removed the identification from the entry binders, and sent them to a judging panel of national experts. We didn’t know who they were at the time, but I was shocked to find out last night that SYLVIA WEINSTOCK was one of the judges! Woo!

Anyway, I found out a couple weeks ago that I was nominated, along with Jessica’s Cakes, who is also awesome.

The night started out with a red carpet entry, and “paparazzi” photos. Then we were met by a champagne pusher. It flowed a little TOO freely last night, lol! I went with my husband (Michael, from Happenstance Photography), my good friend Spencer The Awesome, and Katrina from Studio Laguna Photography, who’s really cool to hang out with. No matter what went down last night, I knew my company would keep it fun! We wandered around and looked at the amazing displays, then sat down to dinner.

The awards presentation started shortly after dinner, and I was really impressed by the whole presentation. The blurbs we included were used to introduce us (and some were immense sources of entertainment.. who knew that “left to right” orientation on invitations was “unique”?), and the photos included with submission were flashed on large screens on either side of the stage. There was an evening-gowned woman carrying the awards (a gorgeous, slightly phallic faceted glass pillar that weighs a ton), award presenters with witty commentary, etc.

Oh, and the winners were expected to give an acceptance speach. Not something I’d really considered, and given that I kind of expected Jessica to win, I wasn’t really worried about it.

So, the cake awards were just over halfway to the end. Right after the category before cakes, the announcers said something like “and now, we’d like to remember those who have passed away before us”. I just about died. What a weird, solemn way to lead off the cakes awards, wtf right? They started displaying various wedding items on the screen, along with years of their “lives”. I mean, pouffy sleeves, cake fountains, plastic flowers, raspberry lace, etc. It was hilarious!

Then it was the cake category. They went alphabetically, so my introduction was first. It was kind of surreal, all in all.. but I was jarred into some serious snickering when the announcer read off the name “Mad Hatter Acid Trip” when describing one of the cakes entered. LOL! Picture a very serious, formal, radio type voice, in a black tie event, saying “acid trip”. It was great! Maybe I amuse too easily, lol.

Then Jessica’s introduction came, and I was shocked to see a groom’s cake included. Crap!! I didn’t even think of including groom’s cakes – that would definitely be a way to really showcase “excellence in cake design”. This is when I was pretty much convinced that she had it cinched.

Well, I let out a “holy shit!” when they called my name, it really kind of caught me off guard. I gave the worst, most un prepared speach of the night (”I was convinced that Jessica was going to win, and didn’t prepare anything. Um. I guess I should thank my husband, who took the photos.. and everyone, I guess.. thank you…uh.. yaaaa… um OK. Thanks!”, or some such) and was generally in a daze.

It was all very surreal, but very cool. Now I have to get my husband to take a picture of my new blingy award. It’s purty.

Big News .. and a little bit of fan-girling it up.

So, a few months ago, I posted about the Butterfly Social charity event.. and raved about Wolfgang Puck’s catering company.  I’d met a couple of their representatives at an industry thing the day before, and they treated us very well at the event.  MMm. I should have had breakfast before posting this, because just thinking about it.. wow. Amazing food.  Even all these months later, I’m vividly impressed by what they catered.

Anyway, so I have a big raging corporate crush on the company.  Aside from the ridiculously good food (Seriously, words don’t properly convey the gastronomic bliss we experienced that night!), every single one of their employees that I’ve met have been awesome.  Oh, and the sky room at the Walker? Amazing.  All around, these guys are a shining example of what is RIGHT in the industry right now.

So, imagine my giddy delight when, after recently doing a cake for one of their brides, I received an email stating that they would now be referring people to me, as their preferred cake vendor. *Completely* tickled pink here!

Now, I need to clarify – This isn’t one of those situations I’ve ranted about before. Rather than being tainted by kick backs or other ugliness, this is completely merit based, on both sides. LOVE it! I am so thrilled, and consider this an honor and compliment of the highest order!

So, that’s that, my big news :) I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll have other big news to announce on Monday (or a week or two later, given my penchant for procrastination!).. but this one really made my year!

Oh, and a shameless plug – If you are looking for the most amazing venue and food for your holiday party, wedding, or whatever.. give Andrea at Wolfgang Puck a call (612-253-3407). They will take care of you and feed your guests the most delicious food out there.. all while you’re enjoying an amazing view of the city. I just wish I’d known about them when I got married!!

What a weekend!

It was the best of times.. it was the worst of times… Seriously.

This past weekend is one that we’ve been looking forward to for the past year – we were hired to cater goodies for 500 or so people at a convention in Chicago. The people that run it are awesome, really know how to throw a party.. and the convention goers are also cool, for the most part. (A few notable exceptions, but I won’t bother getting into that here!)

It was also the weekend of my very first cake decorating competition, and I was very much looking forward to that – since APRIL. Had it all planned out, we worked the logistics out down to the last minute, and altered our weekend plan to be able to pull both off. This meant that, although we were serving goodies Saturday night in Chicago, we had to be back in Minneapolis by 1pm ish on Sunday… which meant meticulous attention to sleep from Thurs-Saturday, forgoing a lot of partying, and some minor abuse of (legal) stimulants. Maybe a lot of abuse. LOL.

Anyway, we woke up early, early Sunday morning and hit the road at an ungodly hour.  We strategized, visualized, and I got some rest on the way.. until things got weird in the middle of Wisconsin.

It started innocently enough.. I noticed that the back window of our delivery van looked foggy. Not that IT was actually foggy, but that the air was foggy behind it. There was no fog, but for some reason, I didn’t give it too much thought.  A few mins later, hubby asked if the engine was racing, but I didn’t hear it. I mentioned the weird foggy thing, looked back, and
the window was suddenly soaking wet. It wasn’t raining or anything. Hubby freaked, made me pull over.. and that was the beginning of the end of our competition hopes.

The initial idea was that the transmission blew – there was transmission fluid everywhere. He hitchhiked to the nearest town to see about buying transmission fluid, in the hopes that we could get as far as a gas station, where he could get a better look. I started calling around hopelessly, trying to figure out a way to get to the competition.. unfortunately, anyone we knew that would be coming back from Chicago were a few hours behind us :(

After a few hours of working on it, hubby managed to fix it. Something in the radiator had burst, so he had to replace it. on the road, with none of his tools. Sigh. At least we weren’t stranded long term. We ended up arriving at the Mall of America JUST in time to see the awards presentation. Oh, AND I was completely snubbed by a so-called friend of mine, which just capped the adventure off perfectly, you know? These are the days of our cakes…

On the upside, we did have a wild time at the convention. Made a lot of friends, impressed a few key people, and were made to feel like utter Rock Stars. We debuted a new flavor of cake – Milk Chocolate Cardamom-Pear upside down cake, which went over extremely well… and the event chairperson booked us on the spot for next year. Always a good thing.

So, C.A.M… you guys rock! The great memories from this weekend are almost enough to smooth over the agony of defeat.. not at the hands of another cake designer.. but our delivery van. Sigh.

Hopefully next year, the convention will be on a different weekend than the competition.

BIG FREAKING NEWS. (!!!!!!!)
