I haven’t been shy about my love for Twitter. It’s been great personally AND professionally. I’ve met a ton of awesome people… some virtually, some in person. Great stuff!
A few months ago, I started a collaboration with one of my twitter buds, @RBKCreations, who makes the most amazing bouquets out of felt, fabric, and buttons! I’m a huge fan of incorporating fun, unique touches in weddings, really personalizing them – and these bouquets really speak to me. Well, more like scream “WANT!!!” to me . Absolutely adore her work.
The fruits of that venture will be blogged about in the next month or two. Her bouquets are such a unique art, I can’t resist giving you guys a sneak peek!

I recently had the opportunity to make my very first black wedding cake, for one of my absolute *favorite* brides of the year. Maybe ever.
I’d love to do a full blog entry on their wedding eventually – the visuals were so striking! The bride had a wonderful design vision, the venue was gorgeous… and you know I have a soft spot for brides who throw convention and “expectations” to the wind and really march to their own beat.
In the meantime, however… I’ll present you with photos of their cake! This cake was themed around their Halloween / Goth / NIN wedding through and through – it was Blood Orange Truffle flavored! (”Our deeply rich, dark chocolate cake is filled with alternating layers of blood orange chocolate truffle ganache, and blood orange buttercream.”). Not only specifically “Blood” orange – tee hee! – but that particular flavor cuts to a beautiful orange / deep dark chocolate brown. Seasonal colors!
The cake featured sugar roses in varying shades of gray, dusted with black accents. It also featured dark gray “lace” made from Sugar Veil icing – a unique product that allows a cake designer to pick up piped designs and drape it like fabric! Exciting… and meant that the entire cake was edible!

More detail photos of this cake can be seen on our Facebook site, Here

Even a small, fairly basic groom’s cake can be striking. Here’s a great example!
The yellow sugar rosebud “boutonniere” & accent rose matched the many sugar roses on this couple’s cake.

Detail photography spotlight again!
This cake was from a wedding in June 2008.. but I’ve always loved the close up detail shots, so I figure it’s about time to share!
This was a really cool cake to do, just very time and labor intensive! Each individual petal was piped in meringue, baked, assembled into flowers and held together with more meringue, then re-baked!
The meringue flowers were made from around 7 different shades of white, ivory, silver, and pink. Rather than being a load of frosting flowers all over this cake.. it was frosted with brown sugar swiss meringue buttercream, then covered in these crispy meringue cookies!
Very cool.

Time for another “Artsy Photos” spotlight! Thanks again to my husband Michael, at Happenstance Photography. This week’s cake photo choices are inspired by our recent trip to Stillwater, and all of the changing colors outside.
This cake was one of our rare non-fondant cakes. We created a special frosting to acheive the textured “stucco” effect, and airbrushed it twice – once in chocolate, once with a deep red – for a slight gradient effect.
The leaves were all made from gumpaste, allowed to dry, then individually airbrushed with several colors of red, orange, copper, and gold.
Definitely one of my favorite Fall-themed cakes ever.

I came across a gorgeous detail shot of some of my custom, handpainted sugar lilies this morning, and thought I would share:

The nice thing about being married to a photographer is that I have an insane amount of photos of everything I’ve ever made. The not-as-nice thing about that is that there are many, many gorgeous photos that never make it to the site!
The 3 basic types of photos I choose from are:
“Straightforward” – These are the photos that you see in my galleries, and in my print portfolio. Straightforward shots of the entire cake, everything in focus.
“Artsy” – You see these sort of photos on the other pages of my site. It may be a partial view, it may feature a low depth of field (background looks fuzzy), etc. As I have only a finite amount of “other” pages, and each of those only has a certain amount of text to accent, I don’t get the opportunity to use many of these photos. They sure are pretty to look at, though!
“Detail” – These are some of the coolest to look at… but unfortunately I have the least amount of actual use for them. Photos of a very small part of a cake, really highlighting the beauty of a specific technique or design element.
I think it’s about time that some of these photos get their time in the spotlight!
As always, all photos on this site are courtesy of Happenstance Photography. If you need any product or food photography done, be sure to shoot him an email!

W00tstock Awesomeness.
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010I had fully intended to write this blog yesterday, but I was a complete zombie. I’m *mostly* recovered now, so let’s see if I can do this thing justice!
Back in the beginning of March, I received an email from one of my tweeps. She excitedly told me that w00tstock was coming to Minneapolis, and “I don’t know about you, but I think w00tstock would be better with cake!”
Well, I had to agree, so I got a hold of Paul and Storm, the geeked out musical comedians in charge. Offered up some cake, they were interested, mentioned I’d have my husband – a photographer along with me to take pics… they asked if he’d be willing to be the official backstage photographer (Willing? Hell YES he was!)…
and we were on track for an adventure in epic geekery!
The plan was to make a surprise “Tardis” cake for Adam Savage & Wil Wheaton. Hubby would photograph the goings on, while I doled out samples of our caffeinated brownies and blondies (from our line of baking mixes. Cake would be served, geeking out would occur, and it would be an awesome night.
Monday was the day, finally! It had been difficult to not blab the details of the cake design itself, while I had been free to tweet that I would be DOING a cake. Everyone wants to know what it’ll look like, especially when it’s a.) Geeky, and b.) Intended for geek royalty! This blog entry is gonna get long and image-heavy, so click through to read & gawk!
