HUGE announcement!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

If you follow us on Twitter, you’ve come to know a few things in the past 24 hours:

1. We’re nominated for an ISES Star award! (Events industry, a BIG deal!)

2. Not only that, the nomination is based on our 4′ long Klingon Bird of Prey cake, which we made back in November for Commedia Beauregard Theatre’s production of A Klingon Christmas Carol.

3. Given that having the opportunity to make such a cake was so ridiculously epic.. actually getting nominated for a big fancy MAINSTREAM industry award for it is completely once-in-a-lifetime!

4. This is a fancypants red carpet kind of event, which means it needs.. Klingons.

Yes, we’ve always been the types of people to live life to it’s absolute fullest, and the idea of having a Klingon entourage at such an event went from “wouldn’t it be awesome if..” to “We HAVE to make this happen!” in a very short amount of time. We don’t have any spare budget for the $300 in tickets that this would require, so we put out a plea to our friends, fans, and followers. To anyone who finds this idea to be full of win, who would be willing to chip in a few bucks to make it so.

The nerd/geek/gaming community has been awesome, and – to date – we’ve raised enough money to buy 2 of the 4 tickets! Thank you SO much to Commedia Beauregard, Kris A Spiesz, Damon Johnson, Margaret Cooper, Shannon Bergeron, & Nik Wachter for their donations! We truly appreciate your generosity, and it tickles us to no end that there are other people out there that agree – this is a great idea!

Well, I’ve got friends in AWESOME places… and I am SO excited to announce that our friends over at the most RIDICULOUSLY awesome company ever (IMHO!*), Thinkgeek.com have offered to lend their support to our quest!

EVERYONE WHO DONATES TO OUR “SPONSOR A KLINGON” EFFORT WILL BE ENTERED IN A RAFFLE FOR ONE OF TWO 2 $75 GIFT CERTIFICATES TO THINKGEEK.COM

Yes, all caps are obnoxious.. but I really think that statement required it. I am BLOWN AWAY by the generosity! Thinkgeek.. man I love you guys. BIG box of goodies coming your way as soon as I have some time to concoct some funky new experiments for ya!

Those who have already donated will also be entered in the draw. Donations must be received prior to March 22, 2010 – OR before we reach our $300 goal, whichever comes first. Click here to visit our sponsor page, which has all of the details, and a link to donate.

Thank you, everyone, so very much for your support! We were thrilled to be nominated in the first place, and now that it looks like we really will be able to have an entourage of Klingons with us.. just wow. I’m blown away by the generosity and support of the community! As a nerd (me!) and a geek (my husband/Chief Engineering Officer), we are thrilled, honored, and humbled. Represent!!

* I’m not being biased. Although ThinkGeek has been a ton of fun not only to shop from and work with, with regards to our Brownie Mix… they also put THIS video out recently. So completely full of win that there really isn’t anything I can – or need to – say about it! Although I will say, it kinda makes me wanna drop everything, drive out east, and show up on their doorstep, begging for a job with them!

When I was a young girl, one of my FAVORITE movies of all time was “Day of the Triffids”. Well, it was a BBC Mini Series… close enough! Anyway, I loved it. Loved it! I’d make triffid themed jewelry for myself (both paper and “friendly plastic” versions).. a paper mache.. erm, not sure what I’d call it. “Desktop Sculpture”, for lack of a better term? Paper cutout door decorations.. yeah, again.. I was a weird kid.

As an adult, through the wonder of Netflix, I was able to rent a different version of the movie… only to be sorely disappointed. (1962 version). My husband had never seen Triffids, and I’m sure he thought I was totally off my rocker when he watched it. Some day, I thought, we’ll get our hands on the version I liked as a kid.

Anyway, I *just* found out that the BBC has remade Day of the Triffids. (I read about it Here.)

First thought: *shrieking like an excited little girl*

Second thought: “Wait. Look what happened when “V” (another childhood favorite) got remade. Don’t get excited, this could be utter crap”.

So, hopefully I’m not getting prematurely excited about this, but I put WAY more confidence in the BBC (who did the version I liked in the first place), than the yahoos that remade V…

… and the clip looks AWESOME! Oh my lord! Could it actually turn out BETTER than the one I adored as a child? MAYBE! So exciting! I’m really happy that they redid the catalyst of the widespread blindness, also. Anyway, let me digress, before this just degrades into random, incoherent fangirling.

I would looove to do a Triffids themed wedding cake. Do I think anyone will ever hire me for one? Probably not. However, Triffids are plants (Flowers, even?)… and that opens up the possibilities for doing one as a contest showpiece. THAT would be awesome!

So I was on Twitter today, minding my own business.

Well, that’s a bit inaccurate, isn’t it? The nature of Twitter and all… more like “I was on Twitter, reading about EVERYONE’S business”… anyway, I digress. I certainly wasn’t thinking I was gonna be gobsmacked by something so insanely craptacular, it would result in a blog post!

… and even less so, that it would result in a new “You know what would be awesome…?” post! Anyway. Digress…. again.

@bridetide tweeted the following: “Thoughts on this wedding cake table decor? ~ http://bit.ly/6GqsH3” For those of you unable to view the link at work, I’ll post the pic below:

My thoughts, all I could even semi-coherently put into words, were “WOW. Just.. wow”. So eloquent, I know. CakeorDeathCA put it a bit more succinctly – “Kind of .. a sin against humanity.”

I didn’t know where to start. I’m sure some of you know about the loathing I feel towards plastic fountains… but this photo really incorporates a bit of every “bad thing” I can think of, when it comes to 80s wedding decor. Balloons! Tulle Abuse! Cake staircases! Unnaturally colored silk florals! The cherry on top, of course, is that they used not one, but THREE fountains!

Closeup Cake Pic

I got to thinking.. “That HAD to be on purpose…” THEN I got to thinking..

You know what would be awesome? A wedding with “Bad 80s” as a theme. I mean “Wedding Singer”, and THEN some! To just basically go through every bad 80s nightmare / throwback, and incorporate EVERYTHING into the wedding! Think about it..

EVERYTHING dripping tulle. Oh yes. And not just white tulle.. but COLORED tulle. Like.. Fuchsia and Turquoise. Yes! To match the taffeta, pouffy bridesmaid dresses with BIG pouf sleeves and BUTT BOWS! Matching gloves and satin shoes too, of course. TONS OF HAIRSPRAY!

ALL the flowers would be dyed-to-match pink and turquoise silks. Like really cheap, dollar store variety – NOT the silks that actually look like what they’re supposed to. Except.. maybe some carnations! Yes!

The cake would have about 30 layers all over the place, and would need like 2 banquet tables to hold it all. Staircases and fountains and tulle everywhere! Turquoise royal icing roses on white! Plastic bridesmaids and groomsmen and everything. Adorning the cake table would be a ton of tulle, more plastic flowers, and… matching napkins with name/date/logo embossing on it. Maybe some personalized matchbooks, too!

OOH! And everyone can show up in 80s clothes.. the music would be fun – and really easy to decide on – oh yeah! All the stuff I’d probably wrinkle my nose at in any other situation. LOVE SHACK! Aw yeah!

Oh, I’m getting all worked up just thinking of all the possibilities! What a wedding! That would be a ton of fun. I bet it would be a lot of fun to either attend, or just to make the monstrosity of a cake for!

Actually.. man, I should talk my husband into marrying me again. I have WAY more ideas for how I’d redo our wedding, than he’d EVER humor me on, LOL. I’ll have to file this idea behind the “Go to Vegas and get married, drunk, by an Elvis impersonator” one, though.

Man, who ever thought I’d actually be able to do a follow up to a “You Know What Would Be Awesome..?” post?

I mean, the whole point of that category is for be to babble on some of my weird ideas that are so wacky, they’d never be realized. No fruition expected!

Well, this past week was “The Affair”, formerly known as a the Twin Cities Chocolate Extravaganza. As was the case last year, the show featured a chocolate competition, overseen by the Pastry Professionals Association of MN.

Last year, I had grandiose plans for my 2 cake entries, but procrastinated / got distracted by higher priority stuff, and ended up just mailing it in with my entries. Total crap, and only earned me a certificate. This year, I planned to avoid that when I entered… but felt utterly uninspired by the theme: Animals. What was a girl to do?

Get weird with it.

So, after some thought, I decided to do a wedding cake based on the greatest monster movie of all time – Tremors. Grabboids are *totally* animals, right? LOL.

So check it out. A Tremors themed wedding cake!

The topper features Val & Earl’s truck being sucked into the ground.. Val in a sleeveless tuxedo tshirt and cowboy hat (as I imagined he’d wear if he were to get married!)..and Rhonda. Both cowering from a grabboid! So romantic.

The rest of the cake features 3 more grabboids, including the one that died when trying to chase Val & Earl through a concrete retaining wall. Yes!

I had been considering representing the 2nd-last-to-die grabboid – but I wasn’t sure the judges would appreciate “guts” on a wedding cake.

Hrmm.. I was pretty sure they wouldn’t appreciate a Tremors cake in general, so in hindsight.. maybe I shouldn’t have let that thought stop me!

In any case, they couldn’t have hated it too much – got me a silver medal for it! Woo!

Also, my favorite blogger featured the cake yesterday! Click here to check THAT out!

Now I just have to hope that next year’s theme is “plants”, so I have a good excuse to make a Triffids cake!

A cake based on Tremors!

I’ve been daydreaming about this for awhile. A big birthday, wedding, or groom’s cake featuring Val, Earl.. and graboids (grabboids?) coming out of the sides! With gel goo spilling out! Maybe some gory limbs laying around on top of the cake.

As a cake designer with a primarily wedding market, I spend a lot of time fashioning pretty things out of gumpaste, fondant, etc. What I wouldn’t give to spend a day fashioning grabboids out of sugar.

Oh, THAT would be awesome.

On an almost daily basis, I find myself completely in awe of the fact that my husband and I found each other. We have both have completely warped, twisted senses of humor, and the frequency with which we come up with weird ideas in line with each other.. always amuses me. He is the Butthead to my Beavis.

Till now, any of our weird cake / wedding industry thoughts & ideas have pretty much been left between us. I think it’s time for that to change, and this blog provides us with an excellent vector for sharing such insanity with the world!

The catalyst involved here was an ironically appropriate one – we were watching the first disk of Quantum Leap, season 1. Can you believe it’s been 20 years since the show debuted? Crazy. Makes me feel old, but I digress.

Anyway, I had this idea in my head. You know what would be awesome? Showing up to a bridal consultation, and answering every question with “Ziggy says…” or “Well, according to Ziggy, there is an X% chance that….”

Of course, I don’t have the fortitude to do that and be able to keep a straight face, but.. the thought tickles me. THAT’S what would be awesome… and that inspired this new category for the blog! Expect strange ideas and general weirdness from anything posted under this category in the future
